Still looking for a pal.

Well,I am quite upset now.

I am upset with these small non-shelter based rescue groups who foster their dogs in private homes and then want me to fill out a lengthy application complete with personal references, an interview and a $200 nonrefundable adoption fee.
This is getting ridiculous.
I just want a little dog.

I am not upset with the lady who came out this weekend with the dog.
She was a very nice woman and really loved the dog.
I could not have taken the dog from her even if I had wanted it.
She loved the dog and the obviously loved her.

But.....
This morning, I found another dachshund on another website in a small town about 70 miles from here.
I e-mailed the group and called the number on the web site thinking I would get an answering machine.
Well, I didn't get a machine, I got this woman's home.
First of all, she sounded half asleep.
I could hear dogs barking in the background.
She said yes, the dachshund was still available, she was right there in the house. And she said she would e-mail me an application to adopt the dog.
AND she said she had 9 dogs NINE DOGS there at her house and she thought she would have time to e-mail me the application BEFORE SHE LEFT FOR WORK!

Now I am sorry but this is totally CRAZY.
This woman has 9 dogs IN HER HOUSE and she is leaving for work.......
and I am supposed to fill out a 2 page application with personal references, a veterinary reference agree to an interview and give her a $200 NONREFUNDABLE adoption fee AND sign a contract saying that if I ever gave the dog away, I would have to agree to return the dog to their rescue group.

THAT IS NUTS>>>I'm trying to get ONE LITTLE DOG.
This woman has NINE dogs in her house and she is LEAVING FOR WORK and I have to prove to her that I would be a good dog owner?????

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE??????????

Needless to say I am NOT going to pursue this little dog although if i could drive down there and steal it just to get it out of that environment, I would.

RIDICULOUS.

That seems like an aweful lot of hoops to jump through. I imagine these private rescuers have their reasons, but at this point, I think I'd keep looking. And be asking alot of questions myself. I think you'll find the 'just right pal' for Cookie, don't give up yet!

I found you through "That's my question" I'm sorry you're having such a problem finding/adopting a pet. We jumped through similar hoops when we adopted our greyhounds.

Well, I have to stand up for the rescue organizations. I foster for the SPCA, which has no facility in this county, so all dogs are in foster homes. I love every dog I foster, but am thrilled to see them go to good homes (to answer you comment about not taking the dog from the woman because they obviously loved each other--if she could keep him, she probably would adopt him).

The SPCA has forms to fill out and fees to pay because they want to ensure that the dogs go to good homes that actually want them. You'd be surprised at how many women, for example, fall in love with the dogs, but their husbands are not happy about it or we can see that the personality match is not right--we won't put a jumpy, nervous dog in a home with kids, for example--we want to make sure the dog is going to be in a happy home.

We've been trying to find the right home for our neurologically impaired puppy, Nicki, for example, because she needs just the right home that can work with her to help her achieve all that she can, not just someone who wants her because she's so cute.

The SPCA also makes you agree that if you have to give the dog up, you'll bring it back to us, to avoid having it go to a shelter or a bad home.
